Inlays/Onlays in Albuquerque, NM

Inlays and onlays are restorative appliances that can repair teeth damaged by cracks, fractures, or extensive cavities. They are a conservative alternative to dental crowns. At A Better Smile Dentistry in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we use CEREC® technology to fabricate inlays and onlays and are placed in a single appointment. Inlays and onlays can repair your damaged or decayed tooth, helping to restore its structural integrity and function immediately.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are customized restorations made from durable and natural-looking porcelain. They are designed to repair the damaged biting surface of a tooth incurred from decay or injury. Inlays and onlays rest over an impaired tooth and are planned, based on the location and severity of your damage.

An inlay can repair the area in the center of a tooth between the cusps or help replace old silver amalgam fillings. When the damage includes a larger size and extends down the margins of the tooth, an onlay can be used.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are often a better alternative when compared to other restorative materials, such as dental crowns or fillings. While tooth-colored dental fillings offer the same aesthetic appearance, if the decay is widespread, a filling may not support the tooth's structural integrity entirely.

Porcelain inlays and onlays are more robust and aesthetically pleasing than dental fillings, significantly when the cusps of a tooth have been affected. They provide maximum support for molars used for chewing and breaking down food.

Inlays and onlays allow you to retain more of your natural tooth structure. This makes the treatment quick, affordable, and comfortable. The inlay or onlay restorations will help improve your oral health, prevent further damage and provide lasting and natural results,

How Are Inlays and Onlays Placed?

During your first consultation, Dr. Bao will examine the extent of the damage. He will take X-Rays to determine whether an inlay or onlay would best suit your needs.

Before the inlay or onlay is created, we will numb the area and gently prepare the tooth by removing any damaged matter. Using the CEREC® technology, digital impressions will be taken to create a 3D model of the tooth. The images will then be transferred to the CEREC® machine to fabricate your restoration.

Once we are satisfied with the results, the milling machine will manufacture your customized inlay or onlay. The process will generally be completed in less than one hour. Once the restoration is ready, we will make sure that it fits correctly and then permanently bond it to your tooth, carefully checking your bite to ensure maximum comfort.
